As my presence on social media or network started growing there is always a question that comes up during the conversation. Particularly when I meet people at any event. How do you select a book to read or what’s your choice. As my reading lists contain a wide range of books (genre wise).
Let me try and share:
Initially when I started reading my choice was based on the books that take me away from real life or surroundings. So mostly I used to read fiction – fantasy, adventure, and thriller. Here I was exclusively reading for pleasure. Though I had no choice but to select due to my access to books based on what was available to me (I used to read at my friend’s place who was also my neighbor).
As I moved along with age and qualifications my reading choices became increasingly towards fiction based on real life, thriller, and non-fiction (memoir, biography, and autobiography) and poetry to certain extent. Reading for pleasure remained though along with curiosity to learn about wider world. Occasionally read self-help books as they were widely available and, I was curious about the books if they are helpful in real life situations. I had access to amazing libraries and was staying in a hostel now you can guess about time and reading.
Once I started working the profession as well helped me to read wide variety. Though reading for pleasure surely was there my choice of reading took its new turn, I realized reading for pleasure has no single definite choice but what makes you enjoy reading. Now fiction and non-fiction choices have started growing. This is the time when the bookstore chains started growing and browsing books and leisurely selecting to buy impacted my reading as well. Buying books and reading them. For some time worked in places where I stayed on campus. More time at disposal for reading along with this helped me to suggest books to others as a professional. Feedback from others of my choice gave impetus to my reading for various reasons.
Present times – as I grew older – professionally and age wise along with reading internet and various reading groups I am part of helped me as well in my reading choices. I am not talking here about the algorithms that suggest based on reading choice, but about reading groups when discussing books, I pick up books that seem interesting from other readers. Now most of the time I pick up a book without even checking and it turns out to be an interesting book. Many times, I think vaguely about a book, and I get that book. Universe conspiring to send amazing books that I get to see in bookstores or reading groups or on social media or my students share with me. Now I believe that what I wish for I get to read, mostly they are helping in making me a better person. My choice and selection came without spending time to look for reading, mostly the books are coming to me.
HAPPY READING
